Energy@Work is a leading edge energy management company. Their mission is to achieve sustainable and cost effective solutions for our clients. We provide independent strategic advice and support in implementation to commercial, industrial and institutional clients seeking to optimize their energy use.

In order to reach out to existing and potential clients they need a web site that will highlight the work that they do and the impact this work has on their clients.

In addition they wanted to have a document management system that could be share with clients to keep them informed of the regular reports on energy usage. This site would need to securely and privately service multiple clients.

Implementation by RKIL

As a relatively small business, Energy@Work required a web site that allowed their own staff to update the site both with actual page posts as well as sharing their social media content.

RKIL working with Energy@Work’s graphic designer to create a look for the public site, then built a site using Squarespace.com. The site contains content created by the staff at Energy@Work, along with references to their Twitter posts.

In addition, RKIL created a private site which would allow the posting of documents for each client. The site was built using Squarespace.com as well, and with individual client passwords.

The World Health Organization's mission is "To improve people's lives, to reduce the burden of disease and poverty, and to provide access to responsive health care for all people".

Part of the the fulfillment of that mission includes providing safe drinking water to the the 1 in 5 people who do not currently have it.

In places where some form of water treatment was in place, the WHO wanted to develop a way for the operators of the systems to be able to get recommendations on how to operate their water treatment plants safely.

Implementation by RKIL

Team with the training specialists at DJ Films, RKIL proposed an expert system that used a question and answer format to walk an unsophisticated plant manger through the basic recommendations for plant safety.

The application was developed using Adobe's Flex suite to allow for the same source code to deploy Windows and Macintosh versions of the application, including the multimedia help files.

Although about 2% of the people in the world stutter, there is very little research into helping people who do. There is no know cause, no known cure.

iCanSpeak is a deeply personal project. It comes from years of sharing the challenges of someone who stutters, and looking for anything you can do to help.

Research has shown that a technique called ‘choral speaking’ has been successful for some people who stutter. Choral speaking involves two or more people saying the same thing, at the same time.

Choral speaking can be simulated with technology, though to date it has been expensive and cumbersome.

Implementation by RKIL

RKIL create an app that provides people who stutter with the option to use an iPhone with the Live module to simulate choral speaking. To assist with work with a Speech Pathologist, the Techniques module provides exercises that can assist with establishing and maintaining fluency.

The project is also building a Care module which will provide ways to gather data and work with a Speech Language Pathologist remotely.

The Residential Programs Group of the Office of Energy Efficiency at NRCan is responsible for the enforcement of Section 5 of the Energy Efficiency Act. The Act is Canada's response to the need to reduce the amount of Green House Gases that are produced as the result of using energy inefficient devices.

The Act requires the manufacturers and importers of certain types of energy using products to meet standards for the energy efficiency of these products. The companies are required to register their products with NRCan with information which includes the energy efficiency of the product. In conjunction with Revenue Canada, NRCan then tracks the import of products, and ensures that they meet the standards. The programs most visible component is the EnerGuide label which denotes products that have met the energy efficiency guide lines.

In 1997 there were approximately 1,000,000 imports of products covered by Section 5, and by 2018 the system has grown by orders of magnitude.

Implementation by RKIL

RKIL has progressively built a system with NRCan that allows for the cataloging of products to be tracked by Section 5, and the compliance with the import of those products. The system allowed NRCan to enter product energy efficiency reports, as well as to record information from Customs invoices that included Section 5 products.

The original system was a client/server system which uses Omnis 7 as the client on Macintosh and Wintel workstations with Oracle running on Windows NT as the server. The system has been expanded to include an Oracle web server, and an MQ connection to Revenue Canada that uses Entrust technology.

RKIL has continued to work with NRCan to improve the system which has been extended to include a product web portal that allows importers to check on allowable products before importing, and a secure system of exchanging information with Revenue Canada on imports of products.

The implementation of secure communications with Revenue Canada was awarded a gold medal at the 1998 Distinction Awards for technology in the Federal Government.

Bell Nexxia owns and operates a seamless, coast-to-coast IP-Broadband network that has over 100 points of presence in key locations throughout Canada and the United States.

Bell Nexxia had a requirement to provide project managers the ability to track and report on customer projects. The project managers are based all across Canada, and all have access to the corporate Intranet where a wide range of tools are available.

Implementation by RKIL

RKIL developed a web based application using Lotus Notes and Domino engine that allows project managers to track the status of their projects using a web browser interface. The application allows project managers to update their projects, while the finance and implementation areas can independently update their information on the project.

The system allows data to be exported for additional analysis, and provides special summarized views for management.

The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa is one of the most dymanic Service Clubs in the world with 250 members, 100+ years of service, and more than $400,000 raised for the community every year.

The Club was an early adopter for web sites for a number of reasons including providing up to date information to members, information to the general public, as well as increase the profile for sponsors who participate in Kiwanis events.

At the same time, the volunteer service Club had to find a way to allow for members and office staff to keep the site up to date on a simple and distributed basis.

Implementation by RKIL

RKIL has been supporting the web sites for the Club since 1997, when the first site came up as a pure HTML site.

In 2000, RKIL made use of the distributed ability of Lotus Notes to have a document management system which replicates information stored at multiple locations. The Kiwanis site was a Notes data base that allows members and staff linked to the system to create web pages by creating data base documents in the system. Based on categories specified by the creator, documents can appear at multiple parts of the site, and automatically appear on the home page for a period of time while they are current.

In 2012 RKIL migrated the over 2,000 pages from the site to use a content management system provided by Squarespace, and the Club has made use of this hosting service since that time. In 2017 an e-commerce component was added to allow the Club to sell Christmas trees on-line.

In addition to the main web site for the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa, RKIL also helps support a site for the Kiwanis TV Bingo, as well as a private photo site for members to share event photos, Facebook pages for the Club and the Accora Village Bed Race for Kiwanis, and Twitter accounts.

Camp Bonaventure, Salmon Lodge and The Club on the Bonaventure are a group of salmon fishing lodges located on some of the most beautiful rivers in the Gaspé, Quebec, Canada. These affilated lodges provide fly fishing anglers from around the world with access to some of the best fly fishing water and guides in the world. In fact, in 2013, Camp Bonaventure was named best fly fishing lodge in the world by Orvis.

In order to continue to attract guests, the lodges needed to have web sites that would showcase the fishing, as well as the ambiance from the lodges, the staff and the guides.

Implementation by RKIL

After consultation with the staff at the lodges, and partnering with Henneman Stanley Design, RKIL create web sites for the lodges that provided both english and french sites, and allowed the staff at the lodges to do their own weekly updates for both news and photos.

A year into the rebranding of Accora Village, the team at Ferguslea Properties opted to provide a refreshed site design to highlight the areas that were of most interest to the visitors the site. RKIL along with Deep Partners had identified a significant interest in the News and Events part of the site, was well as increasing traffic on mobile devices.

Implementation by RKIL

During the original implementation process, RKIL made use of its ICE (Infrastructure, Content, Experience) approach that allowed the updating of the user experience for the site, without the need to change the content or the infrastructure.

The new site got a streamlined menu structure, as well as a modified home page which increases the visual impact of the site, and allowed for selected call out boxes to focus attention on special pages. All of the existing content was reused, with no need to reformat or relink.

The site was migrated from IBM Notes, to Squarespace as the Content Management System.

The National Environmental Emergency Center at Environment Canada needed a system to track and report on environmental emergencies. When an emergency took place in the field, officers of the Department would go on site to determine the nature of the problem, and to work with provincial and other agencies to coordinate actions.

The paper based system that was in place presented two major short comings. First, it was difficult for the field officer to keep all the necessary people up to date with the state in the field. Second, it was no simple way for the anyone to determine if there had been a similar incident before, and what actions should be taken.

Implementation by RKIL

RKIL developed a system that allowed the field officers to create an incident report in the field, then through a single dial up connection to the Internet, replicate this information to the provincial office as well as the national office. The officer could update the incident report at any time, and by changing the rating of the incident bring it to the attention of senior staff across the country.

The technology allowed the officers to take the entire 800,000 records from the data base in the field with them on their laptop computers to be able to refer to previous incidents as well as to search for the effects of specific chemicals.

The system developed by RKIL makes use of Lotus Notes. The system can dynamically switch between English and French at any time during the application.

The system uses a client/server architecture with Notes running on Macintosh and Windows clients, and using Lotus Notes on Windows NT with TCP/IP as the data base engine.

Hendry Warren LLP are Accounting Specialists who focus on the Entrepreneurial Enterprise in the Ottawa area. The firm felt it needed a presence on the Web in order to promote itself to potential clients, as well as to potential employees. The web presence had to provide a high degree of functionality and professionalism, at a low cost of entry and maintenance.

A key requirement for Hendry Warren LLP was that the site always be current so that visitors to the site would be able to get an accurate picture of the firm and the many community activities that it is involved in.

Implementation by RKIL

As an accounting firm Hendry Warren LLP did not count web development as a core competency, and did not want to allocate any resources to web specific skills. RKIL implemented a solution that included the use of RKIL's standard web site structure, which was then modified slightly for Hendry Warren LLP's needs. The graphics to the site were redesigned by Stanley Design and implemented by RKIL.

In order to help the firm keep the site up to date without having to acquire web development skills, RKIL put a system in place where the staff can email their updates to RKIL who will post the content for Hendry Warren LLP.
