Although about 2% of the people in the world stutter, there is very little research into helping people who do. There is no know cause, no known cure.

iCanSpeak is a deeply personal project. It comes from years of sharing the challenges of someone who stutters, and looking for anything you can do to help.

Implementation by RKIL

The iCanSpeak project started with individual speech therapy in 1992, and progressed to some custom software running on a desktop computer by 1999. In 2003 iCanSpeak evolved to running on an early smart phone, and now with version 2.0 in 2017, it has become a full suite of tools running on an iPhone.

Live provides help on a daily basis, Techniques will provide exercises for working with a Speech Language Pathologist, and Care will provide ways to gather data and work with a Speech Language Pathologist remotely.

The documentation for the app is in the main web site, allowing for updates to be made without re-releasing the app. The app also has a Facebook page, and a Twitter account to support them.

Requirements

Bell Nexxia owns and operates a seamless, coast-to-coast IP-Broadband network that has over 100 points of presence in key locations throughout Canada and the United States.

Bell Nexxia had a requirement to provide project managers the ability to track and report on customer projects. The project managers are based all across Canada, and all have access to the corporate Intranet where a wide range of tools are available.

Implementation by RKIL

RKIL developed a web based application using Lotus Notes and Domino engine that allows project managers to track the status of their projects using a web browser interface. The application allows project managers to update their projects, while the finance and implementation areas can independently update their information on the project.

The system allows data to be exported for additional analysis, and provides special summarized views for management.

The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa is one of the most dymanic Service Clubs in the world with 250 members, 100+ years of service, and more than $400,000 raised for the community every year.

The Club was an early adopter for web sites for a number of reasons including providing up to date information to members, information to the general public, as well as increase the profile for sponsors who participate in Kiwanis events.

At the same time, the volunteer service Club had to find a way to allow for members and office staff to keep the site up to date on a simple and distributed basis.

Implementation by RKIL

RKIL has been supporting the web sites for the Club since 1997, when the first site came up as a pure HTML site.

In 2000, RKIL made use of the distributed ability of Lotus Notes to have a document management system which replicates information stored at multiple locations. The Kiwanis site was a Notes data base that allows members and staff linked to the system to create web pages by creating data base documents in the system. Based on categories specified by the creator, documents can appear at multiple parts of the site, and automatically appear on the home page for a period of time while they are current.

In 2012 RKIL migrated the over 2,000 pages from the site to use a content management system provided by Squarespace, and the Club has made use of this hosting service since that time. In 2017 an e-commerce component was added to allow the Club to sell Christmas trees on-line.

In addition to the main web site for the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa, RKIL also helps support a site for the Kiwanis TV Bingo, as well as a private photo site for members to share event photos, Facebook pages for the Club and the Accora Village Bed Race for Kiwanis, and Twitter accounts.

These lodges provide fly fishing anglers from around the world with access to some of the best fly fishing water and guides in the world. Implementation by RKIL

After consultation with the staff at the lodges, and partnering with Henneman Stanley Design, RKIL create web sites for both Camp Bonaventure and Salmon Lodge that provided both english and french sites, and allowed the staff at the lodges to do their own weekly updates for both news and photos.

The sites also included video which had been prepared by a number of resources, and the site includes access to these videos.

A year into the rebranding of Accora Village, the team at Ferguslea Properties opted to provide a refreshed site design to highlight the areas that were of most interest to the visitors the site. RKIL along with Deep Partners had identified a significant interest in the News and Events part of the site, was well as increasing traffic on mobile devices.

Implementation by RKIL

During the original implementation process, RKIL made use of its ICE (Infrastructure, Content, Experience) approach that allowed the updating of the user experience for the site, without the need to change the content or the infrastructure.

The new site got a streamlined menu structure, as well as a modified home page which increases the visual impact of the site, and allowed for selected call out boxes to focus attention on special pages. All of the existing content was reused, with no need to reformat or relink.

The site was migrated from IBM Notes, to Squarespace as the Content Management System.

The National Environmental Emergency Center at Environment Canada needed a system to track and report on environmental emergencies. When an emergency took place in the field, officers of the Department would go on site to determine the nature of the problem, and to work with provincial and other agencies to coordinate actions.

The paper based system that was in place presented two major short comings. First, it was difficult for the field officer to keep all the necessary people up to date with the state in the field. Second, it was no simple way for the anyone to determine if there had been a similar incident before, and what actions should be taken.

Implementation by RKIL

RKIL developed a system that allowed the field officers to create an incident report in the field, then through a single dial up connection to the Internet, replicate this information to the provincial office as well as the national office. The officer could update the incident report at any time, and by changing the rating of the incident bring it to the attention of senior staff across the country.

The technology allowed the officers to take the entire 800,000 records from the data base in the field with them on their laptop computers to be able to refer to previous incidents as well as to search for the effects of specific chemicals.

The system developed by RKIL makes use of Lotus Notes. The system can dynamically switch between English and French at any time during the application.

The system uses a client/server architecture with Notes running on Macintosh and Windows clients, and using Lotus Notes on Windows NT with TCP/IP as the data base engine.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) wanted to roll out a Quality Management System across the agency and needed to provide an orientation to all staff on the system.

Implementation by RKIL

RKIL partnered with D.J. Films, a multi media and training company, to provide the back-end system. The server was based on ASP and SQL Serve, and provided a web based interface to allow staff members to walk through the training materials, and perform a test at the end of the session.
